Content Update 1 - Illustrations, Gear, Episodes!
This update comes with the first set of content I wanted to add to the base game:
- Expanded Gear rules and examples! Now you can introduce interesting and weird items for the Vampires to utilize with strange abilities and useful protection. A simple Tag system and abilities that can range from very narrative-forward flavor to similar resource management to their own innate powers. This Gear system is also designed to make it easy to reward players for taking down big enemies and obstacles by making how NPCs and Gear work almost identically, just shifting around some stuff.
- Introductory Episode! Included in the back of the core book and as its own PDF is a small BBBL Episode Guide, a simple setup for an adventure the Vampires can tackle in the Forever Dawn as either their first session in a campaign or a one-shot. This Episode is designed to paint a stronger picture of the Unsetting Apocalypse and touch on various themes of the game, specifically that of either doing the right thing and using your powers to help others or thinking about your own survival and taking the bribe from those in power. It also has a giant T-Rex with a revolver for a face named Revolverface! Designed to be open-ended once all the pieces are set, In Thrall To The Burning Teeth has room for players to be stealthy, to be cunning, to show off their might, and utilize all that they have in their starting arsenal of Manifestations and Guns.
- Vampiric Manifestations! I've added small spot illustrations for the various Vampiric Manifestations to help give a visual to the cool powers. I've also given each Manifestation room to breathe so that it's easier to parse its information and understand what exactly comes with the class of your choosing. Each Manifestation now comes with a Feed Action that is an active way for players to regain ANY Source when they feast on the thing that's unique to their Manifestation. Giving players a proactive way to regain resources felt necessary after a playtest where they followed the narrative but breaking to drink blood or restock felt unnatural and it was very much on the GM to reward them. This way it's still tied to having to trigger your ability and seek something specific BUT should lead to more interesting (and possibly grotesque) story beats.
- Minor Edits and Additions! I made some minor edits here and there, I can't remember what they all were but off the top of my head
- Episode Hooks are now found at the end of the book before References. I'll slowly continue to add to them but here's hoping these get the ideas flowing on what kinds of sessions you could run and send these Vampires on!
- Changed the wording of Spectacles to emphasize that it's more akin to a "dramatic partial" and that players with a Source of 1 or 6 can only succeed OR fail on a Spectacle.
- Added an "Easy Mode" to The Slow Death if you wish to have a less lethal game but still feel the weight and urgency of the Forever Dawn
- Some better layout and text highlighting
- Added [BXLLET> and Casketland to the References, something I can't believe I missed in the first version! Check out these incredible indie TTRPGs if you haven't!
The price of Bloodbeam Badlands has gone up from $10 to $12! I don't expect every update to increase the price but when I put a lot of work hours into an update, whether that's writing or playtesting, I'll reflect the polish and content of the game with a slight price bump. In this case, the $2 bump is primarily for the Adventure I wrote, including in the base game instead of as its own product. If you wish to get in on BBBL while it's cheaper then pick it up before it's done!
Thank you everyone for supporting Bloodbeam Badlands!! I plan to add content as I get excited for what I'm designing, I can't promise you what will come next but I'm seriously feeling a lot of random tables?
