NPCs, Quests, and Game Jam!

Hail, Knights!

This is a big update with a lot of tweaks and additions! Updates are broken down by book.

KNIGHTS GUIDE:

  • Oath mechanics are more prominent, allowing you to gain or lose 1d10 to a Virtue.
  • Tests:
    • You gain Virtue from any success and lose Virtue from any failure
    • Every Test results in Fallout, regardless of success or failure.
  • The definition of Wounds has been broadened, they don't just represent physical damage. You can erase Wounds by taking time and actions that remind your Knight why they quest, meaning just seeking medical aid isn't the only way to recover Wounds during downtime.
  • Destiny:
    • Filling your Destiny clock only once takes your knight out of the game! You can choose how you go out, not just dying, but you have fulfilled your destiny.
    • Marking it 4 times gains you a Divine Mark and "puts you on the path of your final destiny."

GAME MASTERS GUIDE:

  • Guidelines for asking players to roll a specific Virtue.
  • NPCs & Monsters:
    • Added examples DMG and Wounds for Small, Medium, and Large threats.
    • Added NPC Fallout Tables:
      • NPCs and Monsters can now have optional specific Fallout tables when facing off against them. When a player rolls and chooses fallout, the GM will compare it to the NPCs instead of the generic one. This allows for more customization and building when creating threats and helps create a dynamic flow with combat and other obstacles
    • Roll to Defend is defined, changing slightly how players will interpret their rolls when an NPC forces one on them. Similar to Saves in other games.
    • Example NPCs expanded to include fallout tables.
  • Quests:
    • Expanded advice on the JOURNEY - TRIALS - REVELATION framework.
    • The Quest Map was added as a means of structuring the area of a quest. Heavy emphasis on there being no large map of the world in LONGSWORD and that travel and distance isn't meant to be heavily defined. Distance is measured in time and direction, "The town is 3 days North East of the Queen's Capital." You should be experiencing the world in snapshots.
    • Added more Requests from the Queen's Court.

ADDITIONAL FILES:

  • Form fillable Character Sheets are available now for download!

With this update, I feel as though LONGSWORD's core system is as complicated as I'd like it! The price was doubled from a minimum of $3 to $6 to reflect the time spent on writing and testing. Ideally, nothing major will change with the core system and only supplements will expand on what's there!

LONGSWORD Game Jam!

This update also starts the LONGSWORD game jam, a month-long jam for anyone who wishes to add to the system or world! Create quests, monsters, character options like classes or expanded Repertoire abilities, whatever! LONGSWORD is a canvas for everyone to tell their own unique knightly tale! Let's give players a bunch of cool support to help them.

Throughout the month I will be talking about inspirations and cool resources, and shouting out entries that come in, so join it and drop anything you make!

Next Milestone

My next goal is to foster support for LONGSWORD so thank you to everyone who has shared it and bought it! Let me know if you play it and what your thoughts are! My goal for this game jam is to release the Field Guide, a 3rd book that's akin to a Bestiary that fleshes out the biomes of the Queen's Kingdom.

Til' next time...

Safe journeys, Knights!
